Logan Lake Elementary School – 2026

The Microbiology Outreach Foundation (MOF) had the opportunity to bring microbiology education to Logan Lake Elementary School. Located in the rural community of Logan Lake, the school serves students who may not always have access to the same specialized science opportunities available in larger urban centres. Through hands-on activities and interactive discussions, MOF was excited to share the fascinating world of microbiology with the students and provide an engaging learning experience.

The session began with an introduction to bacteria and microorganisms, allowing students to learn about the microscopic organisms that exist all around us. Students explored where bacteria can be found, the different roles they play in our environment, and how they contribute to everyday life. Discussions focused on helping students understand that not all bacteria are harmful and that many microorganisms perform important functions in nature and within our own bodies.

Throughout the program, students participated in a variety of hands-on activities designed to bring microbiology concepts to life. By interacting directly with scientific materials and demonstrations, students were able to observe concepts that are often difficult to visualize. These activities encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and discussion while allowing students to make connections between science and the world around them.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the visit was the enthusiasm displayed by the students. The class actively participated in discussions, asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated a genuine interest in learning more about microbiology. Their excitement continued beyond the session itself, as students were able to recall scientific concepts and terminology the following day, including bacterial flagella and the ways some aquatic bacteria use gas-filled structures to move through water.

The impact of the program was reflected in a message shared by Grade 3 teacher Lynda Humphrey:

“As a rural school, we don’t have easy access to many of the resources found in bigger cities. The Microbiology Outreach Foundation gave us an experience that most students would not otherwise have had access to. Your team drove to Logan Lake, supplied everything needed and provided us with a unique learning opportunity, all at no charge.”

She also noted that students of all abilities were able to participate fully in the activities and that even reluctant learners were excited to engage with the program. For MOF, hearing that students continued discussing microbiology concepts after the session highlights the value of hands-on science education and outreach.

The Microbiology Outreach Foundation is grateful for the opportunity to work with the students and staff of Logan Lake Elementary School. Inspiring curiosity, fostering scientific literacy, and helping students see themselves as future scientists remains at the heart of MOF’s mission. The Foundation looks forward to continuing to share the exciting world of microbiology with communities across British Columbia.
