The Microbiology Outreach Foundation (MOF) visited Dallas Elementary School in February 2026 to deliver the Gut Microbiome program to a Grade 5/6 class. Located in the Dallas neighbourhood of Kamloops, the school encourages students to develop curiosity through hands-on learning and exploration, making it an ideal setting to introduce the fascinating world of microbiology. Throughout the session, students discovered that bacteria are not only found in the environment but also play an essential role inside the human body.
The program began with an introduction to bacteria and the many ways microorganisms interact with our daily lives. Students learned that while some bacteria can cause illness, many others perform important functions that help keep ecosystems and our own bodies healthy. Through interactive discussions, MOF Leaders introduced the concept of the gut microbiome and explained how billions of beneficial bacteria work alongside the digestive system to help break down food and support overall health.
As the lesson progressed, students explored the important relationship between microbes and digestion. By connecting microbiology to something as familiar as eating and digestion, the program encouraged students to see bacteria from a new perspective. Rather than viewing microorganisms as something to fear, students gained a deeper appreciation for the beneficial roles they play in maintaining a healthy body.
Hands-on learning remained at the centre of the experience, giving students opportunities to ask questions, share ideas and actively participate throughout the session. Interactive activities encouraged students to think critically about the functions of beneficial bacteria while strengthening their understanding of how microorganisms contribute to everyday life. By combining scientific concepts with engaging discussions and collaborative learning, the program helped make complex biological ideas accessible to Grade 5/6 learners.
One of the greatest strengths of the Gut Microbiome program is its ability to connect microbiology with students’ own experiences. Learning about the invisible communities of bacteria living within the digestive system helps students recognize that science is closely connected to their everyday lives. This real-world connection encourages curiosity while helping students develop a greater appreciation for the remarkable role microorganisms play in supporting human health.
The Microbiology Outreach Foundation is grateful to the students and staff at Dallas Elementary for welcoming the team into their classroom. Through engaging discussions and interactive learning experiences, the Gut Microbiome program continues to inspire young learners to explore the microscopic world with curiosity and confidence. MOF looks forward to continuing its outreach across Kamloops and sharing the exciting science of microbiology with more students throughout the community.
