Program Summary
The Gut Microbiology Program delves into the fascinating world of microbes that thrive in the human gut. It explores the crucial role of the digestive system and examines how different foods impact our bodies. Through engaging discussions and hands-on experiments, participants enjoy an interactive and educational experience.
Description of Activities
Day 1: Participants will attend a brief lecture covering the fundamentals of the microbiome, digestion, and tips for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. This will be followed by an enjoyable and simple experiment demonstrating the process of fermentation.
Day 2: Kicks off with an engaging recall activity in the form of Jeopardy. Next, participants will observe yeast under a microscope, gaining hands-on experience in microbiology. Finally, the class will dive into a collaborative group activity to explore specific bacteria, equipping them with the knowledge to become true microbe experts!
Learning Outcomes
- The class will be introduced to microbes and why they are essential to life.
- The class will understand how microbes contribute to our everyday lives through food, medicine, and decomposition.
- We want the class to learn about how different and diverse bacteria contribute to the digestive system
- The class will understand how to improve the gut microbiome by understanding which foods have good bacteria
Ties to BC Curriculum – Grade 5
- Questioning and predicting practices will be applied throughout unfamiliar contexts by comparing and identification.
- Processing and analyzing data and information is going to be applied throughout experiments
- Applying and innovating- Students will be expected to apply knowledge from the presentation they just watched into understanding the experiment.
- Communicating- Students will communicate the idea, explanations, and processes of fermentation with one another.
- The class will be able to observe, measure, and record data, using appropriate tools, including equipment and materials safely, identifying potential risks.
Target Ages: 10-12
