The Microbiology Outreach Foundation (MOF) embarked on their biggest program yet by conducting hands-on sessions at the local EUReKA! science camp. Two different programs were carried out for age groups 7-9 and 10-13 that focused on creative hands-on activities and essential biology fun.
These programs were kicked off with an informative introduction to bacteria; what they are, what they look like, and how we interact with bacteria on a daily basis. The students then went on to their first activities that included Glo Germ and Gram staining. When discussing microbes, it was important to demonstrate to students the power of bacteria and how it’s all around us.
The Glo Germ hand washing activity demonstrated just how powerful these microscopic germs can be. The students would rub a liquid gel that has simulated germs on their hands, then practice washing it off. Before and after, students would examine their hands under the black light to see how strongly bacteria sticks to their skin.
Gram staining introduced a more sophisticated approach to bacteria for the older groups. The students were given a slide with non-pathogenic bacteria and completed the Gram staining procedure alongside the help of MOF Leaders. Students were able to use the microscopes to look at their stained bacteria and describe the appearances and morphologies they observed to identify Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.
“It was super impactful to introduce new perspectives to the kids.” – Presley, MOF Leader
“Through the hands-on activities, the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves while also being able to apply their learning through creation and interpretation.” – Hannah, Session Leader
The EUReKA! program was not only impactful for the students, but also for the Leaders. MOF was able to present their valuable information and share their personal experiences and passion for microbiology to a group of eager and excited students. It was an opportune time to provide experiences to children who are so curious of the world around them on the microscopic scale. The children were able to fully engage with intriguing questions and provided insightful and positive outlooks on the activities. The Foundation looks forward to continuing their work with EUReKA! in the future and pursue their love for education students all over British Columbia.
